AfyaFix Nutrition Health Organization Leads World Diabetes Day Campaign in Mbeya

AfyaFix nutrition health organization Leads World Diabetes Day Campaign in Mbeya in Collaboration with Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital (MZRH) and National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR): Screening, Awareness, and Community Empowerment

On November 14, 2024, the parking lot of Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital (MZRH) transformed into a hub of hope, health, and empowerment. In commemoration of World Diabetes Day, AfyaFix, in collaboration with MZRH and NIMR, led a major community initiative to raise awareness about diabetes prevention, management, and care.

Why It Matters

Diabetes is a growing health challenge globally and in Tanzania. Yet, many remain unaware of their status or lack access to early detection and consistent care. The 2024 campaign theme was clear: “Awareness. Screening. Action.” And that’s exactly what AfyaFix delivered.

Objectives That Drove the Event

  • Raise public awareness of diabetes and its complications.
  • Improve early detection among community members at risk.
  • Promote healthy living through practical education on lifestyle choices.
  • Strengthen partnerships between hospitals, organizations, and the community.

What Happened on the Ground

Free Diabetes Screening
Using modern rapid blood sugar testing, over 110 people were screened. Participants discovered whether they had normal, pre-diabetic, or diabetic glucose levels—giving many their first insights into their health.

One-on-One and Group Counseling
Participants received direct counseling from healthcare professionals on:

  • Healthy diet and its role in prevention.
  • Regular physical activity for better glucose control.
  • The importance of managing stress.
  • Staying consistent with diabetes treatments.

Radio Engagement
Two live radio broadcasts leading up to the event significantly increased attendance. This outreach strategy helped mobilize individuals who might not otherwise have accessed screening services.

Key Outcomes

110 individuals screened.

20.9% had abnormal blood sugar levels.

Of those with abnormal levels:

  • 78.3% were female
  • 21.7% were male

Many diagnosed individuals were linked to care under MZRH for further follow-up and management.

The Numbers Behind the Impact

Gender Number Screened Abnormal Glucose Normal Glucose
Female 72 18 54
Male 38 5 33

The Power of Partnership

AfyaFix’s collaboration with MZRH and NIMR made this event a resounding success, demonstrating how synergy between health organizations can transform community health outcomes.

What We Learned

While the event made an impact, it also surfaced challenges—particularly financial constraints, as the campaign was self-funded. This limited the ability to meet all needs that arose on the day.

Recommendations for the Future

  • Extend the Campaign: Start screening and education a week before World Diabetes Day to reach more people.
  • Engage More Stakeholders: Early collaboration with government, NGOs, and private sector partners can improve both reach and resource mobilization.
  • Strengthen Data Use: Leverage data collected to advocate for more community-based interventions and funding.

Final Thoughts

World Diabetes Day 2024 in Mbeya was more than a health event — it was a community movement. AfyaFix remains committed to building a healthier future by creating awareness, offering direct care, and mobilizing people to take charge of their health.

As we move forward, we invite all health stakeholders to join hands with us because together, we can create healthier, diabetes-aware communities across Tanzania and beyond.
